John M. Perkins was born into Mississippi poverty, the son of a sharecropper. At age 17 he fled to California after his older brother was murdered by a town marshal. Perkins accepted Christ in 1960 and returned to his boyhood home to share the gospel of Christ. Perkins and his wife Vera Mae are civil rights and community development leaders.
