The later series of Imagines is called "Posteriores" to distinguish it from the first. In the preface of the present edition, the earlier "Imagines" are ascribed to Philostratus, the Lemnian, son of Nervianus. Graham Anderson (1986) treats Philostratus, the Athenian, as probable author of the 1st series of Imagines and the Lemnian as the probable author of a later series.
